My Life as a Fairy Tale at Lincoln Center Festival
My Life as a Fairy Tale, Stephin Merritt's operatic work based on the life and work of Hans Christian Andersen, will premiere at New York's Lincoln Center Festival this July. It will also be performed in Aarhus, Denmark on September 2-3. This is Stephin's third collaboration with the theater director Chen Shi-Zheng, with whom he wrote The Orphan of Zhao for Lincoln Center in 2003, and Peach Blossom Fan for CalArts' REDCAT theater in 2004.
Performances are at 8PM on July 27, 29, and 30 at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College. Tickets are available through Lincoln Center's CenterCharge online, by mail, or at the Avery Fisher Hall Box Office. Check their website for further details. (Note that single tickets do not go on sale until June 15.)
Online radio listeners can catch an archived broadcast of Stephin as a guest on The Next Big Thing's show about Hans Christian Andersen, "Everybody Is Looking for a Better Place" (show #535, week of April 29, 2005).
Nonesuch Records will be releasing Two Chinese Operas, a two-disc recording of Stephin's previous collaborations with Chen Shi-Zheng, in mid-July. Correction: the release date for this CD has been moved to early 2006. More details TK.
