Merritt in Studio: Recording New Album

Having finished work on the chinese opera "The Orphan of Zhao," Stephin Merritt is back in the studio. He is completing a new Magnetic Fields album, for Nonesuch Records. The album will hopefully be finished by the middle of fall 2003 and available sometime in the first months of 2004. Keep an eye on this site for more updates.

New Lemony Snicket Audio Book: The Slippery Slope

The sensationally scary children's writer Lemony Snicket will be releasing his 10th book in his "Series of Unfortunate Events" this fall, available through HarperCollins. The title of the new book is "The Slippery Slope." As with the prior nine books, the audiobook version will feature an original Stephin Merritt theme song.

"Orphan of Zhao" Closes and "Pieces of April" Premieres

After a successful week-long run, performances of the Chinese opera "Orphan of Zhao" are finished at New York's Lincoln Center Festival. The opera was scored by Stephin Merritt, featuring both Chinese and Western instruments. Opening this fall will be the film "Pieces of April", which will include five previously released Merritt songs by The Magnetic Fields and the 6ths, plus one new song and incidental music. At this point, there are no plans for soundtrack albums for either "Orphan of Zhao" or "Pieces of April". If this changes, we will let you know.
